The BC SPCA is recruiting for a Human Resources Assistant to work at our Provincial Office in Vancouver. 

For those who are new in their career in human resources and would like to get exposure to and work in a variety of different areas related to the profession, we have an exciting opportunity available!  Supporting the people of our organization is as important to our mission as is direct animal care.  This exciting position provides a chance for you to use your talents to make a positive impact by assisting the rest of the HR Team with critical functions such as payroll, recruitment, equity and diversity initiatives, and projects.  Please read below for more details.

What you will do:

General HR Assistant duties include:

        o Answering general inquiries related to Human and Volunteer Resources from all stakeholders including staff, volunteers, third-party service providers, union representatives, government agencies, members of the public, etc.

              Providing answers directly when within scope.

              Exploring inquiries and referring to other members of the HR Team when out of scope.

        o Assisting with the preparation of forms, organizational charts, and job descriptions.

        o Administering the exit interview survey and completing quarterly summary reports.

        o Assisting in the preparation of internal documents including policies and procedures, guidelines/requirements documents for managers, and standard operating procedures as they relate to Human Resources, etc.

              Includes conducting research into best practices and legal considerations including case law and providing findings/recommendations to General Manager, Human Resources.

        o Assisting with internal and external surveys including, but not limited to: employee engagement surveys, volunteer program assessments, training needs assessments, and compensation surveys.

        o Conducting research for the purposes of updating policies/procedures, responding to grievances, preparing for arbitration, and preparing for collective bargaining.

        o Support the HR Team on other projects, as assigned.

Payroll & Recruitment assistance duties include:

        o Assisting users with Dayforce login difficulties and password resets, terminating users, and troubleshooting as required.

        o Processing job requisitions and job postings in the absence of the Recruitment Advisor.

        o Assisting with the distribution and collection of new hire paperwork, change forms, benefits forms, and termination paperwork.

        o Participating on hiring panels and conducting reference/background checks, as required.

        o Entering/tracking employee information in Dayforce.

        o Processing payroll in the absence of the Payroll & Benefits Specialist.

        o Creating and maintaining employee files.

Equity & Diversity duties include:

        o Researching and developing tools to track equity and diversity initiatives, primarily for internal services but may also include external services as well.

              Tracking progress and providing reports as required.

        o Conducting research to inform initiatives, including best practices from other organizations.

        o Participating in implementation of approved initiatives, as required.

Other duties as assigned.  

What you bring:

Completion of a diploma or degree in Human Resources, plus some related experience in a large, complex organization; or an equivalent combination of qualifications acceptable to the employer.  Related experience includes but is not limited to:

        o labour relations, payroll, and/or recruitment;

        o working with HR information systems;

        o creating job descriptions; and

        o working on equity and diversity initiatives

Experience with Ceridian Dayforce HCM specifically is considered an asset

Demonstrated knowledge of Employment Standards, the Human Rights Act, BC Labour Code, privacy legislation, and other applicable legislation related to human resources and labour relations.

Strong computer skills; high proficiency with Microsoft Office particularly Excel, Word and Outlook.

Superior attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy.

Ability to exercise a high level of professionalism and discretion with confidential information.

Excellent organizational and time management skills; ability to multi-task and complete tasks/projects within tight timelines.

Positive attitude along with excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as in a team setting.

Philosophical harmony with BC SPCA policies, programs and protocols.
