Immigrant Services Calgary is looking for a youth (aged 15 to 30 at the start of employment) with a keen eye for detail and fluent in at least one language* in addition to the native language, to fill the position of Translator for Interpretation and Translation Centre (ITC). This is a full-time (30 hours per week) temporary position.


In this role, you will be interpreting written and audio pieces in different languages, making sure to maintain their original meaning, format and tone. Ultimately, you will provide ready-to-use translated content that meets our internal and clients’ needs and helps us reach a broader audience.
 

This position offers a great first-time work experience for qualified youth including developing valuable communication and listening skills through assisting interpretation and translation services at ITC. The position offers opportunities to work with a wide variety of community partners as well as newcomers from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
 

*Languages in high demand for ITC: Spanish, Mandarin and Arabic
 

Duties (that will be performed remotely):

• Reading and thoroughly understanding the context of given material
• Cross-referencing specialized dictionaries and translation tools to check quality of translation
• Proofreading translated texts for grammar, spelling and punctuation accuracy
• Following up with internal team members and clients to ensure translation meets their needs
• Editing content with an eye toward maintaining its original format (e.g. font and structure)
• Networking with field experts to stay current on new translation tools and practices
• Managing ITC’s general email mailbox and voicemail by answering, sorting, and distributing to other staff members according to requests
• Providing any additional remote administrative support to ITC Team as needed
 

Duties (that can be assigned if ITC relaunches back-to-office operations prior to end of contract):

• Receiving visitors at the front desk by greeting, welcoming, directing and announcing them appropriately
• Answering reception telephone and relay telephone calls or messages, data management, and correspondence accordingly
• Performing other administrative duties such as filing, photocopying, scanning, etc


Qualifications:

• Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment
• Valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with Alberta legislation and regulations
• New immigrant or refugee youth who has resided in Canada for less than 5 years
• Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with colleagues, supervisor and clients
• Passion for working with immigrants and refugees
• Cross-cultural sensitivity
• Strong knowledge of various digital systems, tools and applications (especially Microsoft Teams, Outlook and Zoom for remote work)
• Excellent attention to details and organizational skills
• Excellent oral and written English language skills
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills
